July Eyes on the Prize

How do we keep our focus on our work in the sultry summer months full of celebrations, graduations, weddings, reunions, and vacations? As we are well aware of, many of us lose our focus on our work during the summer months. Recently, our office was gifted with an extra day off to celebrate the 4th of July Holiday, only to return to a lot of scattered co-workers and clients playing what seems to be a perpetual "catch up".

What are some ways to stay focused on your business/your work during the summer?
What are some ways to efficiently manage the growing list of duties to catch up on?

1. Plan out Your Day:
    • It is a must to set daily goals and prioritize them in order of importance. In the evening, not only is it extremely helpful to set out your clothes, prepare your food, but it is also psychologically helpful to go over your calendar to ease your mind and produce better sleep resulting in a more productive and focused day. Whether you have a planner you write in or prefer an electronic calendar, utilizing these tools will be of the best assistance to help us stay focused.
    • Schedule your Priorities- not just make a todo list: When I used to write down my list of 20 tasks a day, I would often end up losing the scratch piece of paper I wrote them on, and was left feeling more overwhelmed after I wrote my large task list. When planning out your day, it is important to not just make a to-do list, but organize your tasks in levels of importance. It is better to have 3 very impactful tasks completed than to only complete half of 20 other tasks that are not so effective.
  • Wake Up Earlier:
    • I know, I know this is a tough one for many of us night owls.  However, getting in the habit of getting up even just 30 minutes earlier can make a world of difference. I mean, are you really going to miss 30 minutes of sleep? Rising 30 minutes earlier will take off much pressure and stress for you at the start of your day. What will you do in this 30 minutes? It could be exercise, pray/meditate/, eat a nice breakfast, or go over your schedule and goals for the day if you did not get the chance to in the evening.
  • Keep a Tidy Works Area:
    • Some studies suggest that a cluttered desk can spark creativity. But for many like myself, a cluttered desk contributes to my cluttered mind. Take a few minutes everyday to tidy your work area to help with focus.
  • Take Breaks:
    • Take Breaks from your technology. Computer screens fatigue the eyes, and sitting all day is not good for your body. Take time to unclench your jaw, relax your shoulders, do some chair side twists, or even stand up and walk around when you are on a phone call. Even better if it allows, go for a brief walk outside. These activities increase blood flow which increases brain functioning, thought processing, and focus.
  •  Be Grateful:
    • When we catch ourselves daydreaming about running out of the office and streaking into the nearest swimming pool at 2pm on a Tuesday, or get snippy about missing that happy hour gathering with cold beers on the patio- that signals it is a time to be grateful. Do you know the power of gratitude can turn our whole mood around, and our whole day around, and even our whole life? It is something to be very grateful for to be employed, enjoy steady income, stability, and most likely the chance to make positive impacts on others lives. This attitude of gratitude can help us tremendously to focus on our everyday work, our goals, and our overall work mission.

The Power of Perception

Happy Fall! I love this time of year (except all that ragweed). This month I would like to discuss knowing and promoting your personal brand. I recently gave a key note speech (my first!) called “The Power of Perception”. In my presentation, I discuss the power of perception as well as the importance of being able to recognize and promote one’s personal brand. Perception is reality and your personal brand shapes how people perceive you. It does not take long for others to perceive you in a certain way… but you do have some power to shape that perception. Here are a few tips in doing that: 1.     Don’t assume that your boss, co-workers, or close friends know exactly what you do… and don’t assume that they know exactly what you do. You never know that your weakness could be a friend’s biggest strength unless you ask. Here’s an example: I reached out to a friend of mine to help me with my presentation and when I asked her, she said “Carey, of course I can help with that,...

Strengths Finder

“Hide not your talents.  They for use were made.  What’s a sundial in the shade?” – Benjamin Franklin Happy February!  I hope that your year is off to a great start.  This month I am going to talk about staff development.  Having a diverse but solid team is so vital for the success of a small business.  However, you cannot take a one size fits all approach to managing a team. Oftentimes business owners or hiring managers fail to realize this and subsequently they drive away great talent.  At the end of last year my team participated in the StrengthsFinder survey from the popular book by Tim Rath.  It was a fun exercise for all of us and I think, speaking on behalf of the whole team, we all learned more about ourselves and our team members by going through it.  We also learned the common strengths that bind us all together.  To that end, it was an invaluable exercise for me and my management team to go through because we became more ...

Preparing for the First Day on the Job

Happy June.  The month of June is a transition month for many—having graduated in May, they find themselves moving into careers. In light of that, this month I want to share how to make a great first impression to the new hires who join your team. Whenever a transition happens, making a great first impression is vital to an organization! Have you ever arrived for an appointment—at a restaurant, at the doctor’s office, for an interview—and had the feeling like they were not quite ready for you?  This can cause the business to lose a prospective client or potential valuable employee.  So, what can you do as a business owner to welcome and retain the best people? 1. Be prepared. Companies must be prepared. Lack of preparation can communicate a lack of appreciation or welcome. Preparation does not need to be extravagant; even simple things matter, such as having a work space prepared with all the relevant tools (computer, phone, etc.) ready to go, providing business ...
